About V2I files

The .V2I file is a Virtual Volume Image, a legacy disk imaging format originally created by Symantec Norton Ghost. These files are essentially exact sector-by-sector copies of a hard drive or partition, used primarily for full system backups and disaster recovery.

While effective for its time, the .V2I format presents significant friction today. Norton Ghost was discontinued in 2013, leaving users with "locked" backup archives that are difficult to access on modern operating systems like Windows 10 or 11. The format is highly proprietary; unlike a standard ZIP or ISO, you cannot simply double-click to view the contents. To retrieve a single document from a 500GB .V2I file, users often have to reinstall obsolete software or wrestle with driver compatibility issues to "mount" the image.

To modernize your archives, the best approach is converting .V2I to ISO for broad accessibility or VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) if you intend to run the backup as a virtual machine in Hyper-V. For file extraction, converting to a standard container allows you to browse the contents without needing specific legacy drivers.

Convert.Guru analyzes your V2I file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GHO, GHS, IV2I, VMDK and VHD files.

The V2I Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our V2I converter.
