About V2I files
The .V2I file extension stands for Virtual Volume Image. It is a proprietary disk image and backup format originally created by Symantec for their Norton Ghost software. These files contain a sector-by-sector copy of a hard drive, capturing the entire file system, operating system, and user data for disaster recovery.
Historically, users opened and restored these files using Norton Ghost. Since Norton Ghost is entirely discontinued, modern users typically rely on third-party tools like PowerISO or VMware vCenter Converter to mount the image, view the file structure, or extract the contents to a new drive.
The main disadvantage of the .V2I format is its proprietary, closed nature. Because Norton Ghost is dead software, keeping archival backups in this format is extremely risky. These files routinely exceed hundreds of gigabytes and cannot be natively mounted by Windows, Linux, or macOS, requiring specialized software to access your own data.
Users urgently need to convert .V2I to standard ISO, VHD, or IMG files, or extract the contents directly to a ZIP archive to guarantee long-term data access. Converting away from the proprietary Symantec format removes the dependency on outdated software.
The proprietary compression and encryption used by Symantec make this file extremely difficult to open or convert with standard online tools.
Convert.Guru analyzes your V2I file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert V2I file to VMDK, VHD, GHO, BAK, BACKUP, OLD, TMP, TEMP, ARC, ZIP, TAR or GZ, you can use Norton Ghost or similar software from the "Hard Drive Image Backup" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SNAPSHOT, OLD, IMG, RESTORE, ISO, COPY, VMDK, TMP, VHD, BAK, ARCHIVE or BACKUP files to V2I, try Norton Ghost or another comparable tool in the "Hard Drive Image Backup" category.
The V2I Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our V2I converter.
