About V1 files

A .v1 file is typically an uncorrected accelerogram seismic data file used by the California Strong Motion Program, a scanned document image from Verisys, or simply a generic "Version 1" file masking an underlying format like a PDF, ZIP, or XML. Due to manual file renaming, users often append ".v1" to denote the first version of a file, completely overriding the original file extension.

Depending on its origin, a .v1 file might be opened with specialized engineering software like Seismosoft, archiving tools like WinRAR, or basic text editors. It occasionally stores COSMOS strong-motion earthquake data or Volvo VIDA vehicle diagnostics data.

The primary disadvantage of the .v1 extension is severe fragmentation. Operating systems cannot determine what the file actually is. A .v1 file might contain plain text seismic data, a compressed Apple iWork package, or even a disguised Windows executable (EXE), which poses a security risk. Clicking the file usually results in an "Unknown Format" error, as no default application is assigned to it.

To make the data usable, it must be converted or restored to its true format. For seismic data, convert to CSV or TXT for spreadsheet analysis. For scanned Verisys images, convert to JPG or PDF. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your V1 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted V2, 20, 31 and 11 files.

The V1 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our V1 converter.
