Convert V1 to another file type
To convert your V1 file to another format, you need SeismoSignal or other Data software.
Convert a file to V1
To convert other file formats to the "Earthquake Motion Data" file type, you need software like SeismoSignal or a similar tool.
About V1 files
The .v1 extension is a unique identifier typically shared by two distinct file types, creating frequent confusion for users. In scientific and engineering contexts, it represents uncorrected accelerogram data used by the California Strong Motion Program (CSMP) and the COSMOS standard. These are ASCII text files containing raw earthquake ground motion readings before instrument correction. Users often need to convert these into structured formats like CSV or XLSX (Excel) to analyze the seismic waveforms in standard spreadsheet software, as specialized tools like SeismoSignal require a learning curve and licensing.
However, for the general public, a .v1 file is frequently just a standard document (like a PDF, DOCX, or JPG) that has been renamed by a backup utility, email client, or version control system to indicate "Version 1." In these cases, the file is functionally identical to the original format but locked behind an unrecognizable extension. Users encounter friction because their operating system usually cannot associate .v1 with the correct application (e.g., Adobe Acrobat or Microsoft Word). Converting these involves either identifying the file header to determine the true format or simply renaming the extension back to its original state.
Convert.Guru analyzes your V1 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert V1 file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use SeismoSignal or similar software from the "Seismic Acceleration Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to V1, try SeismoSignal or another comparable tool in the "Seismic Acceleration Data" category.
The V1 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our V1 converter.
