A .UU file is primarily a Uuencoded file, a legacy binary-to-text encoding format originally designed for the Unix-to-Unix Copy (UUCP) protocol. This format translates binary data (like images, executables, or archives) into a safe set of ASCII text characters, allowing files to be transmitted over older text-only systems such as email or Usenet newsgroups without corruption.
