About FEF files

The .FEF file extension is a source of confusion because it refers to three completely different file types, each requiring a unique approach.

  1. FocusOnCrypt Archive (Most Common): These are encrypted containers, often used to hide video or multimedia content behind a password. The primary disadvantage is that they are useless without the original FocusOnCrypt software and the correct decryption key; they cannot be simply "converted" to MP4 or AVI without first unlocking them.
  2. CEN ECG Data: In medical fields, .FEF stands for File Exchange Format, a standard (CEN ENV 14271) used to store electrocardiogram vital signs. These binary files are critical for patient history but are unreadable to standard software. Medical professionals frequently need to convert these to PDF for reports or XML/CSV for data analysis.
  3. Fujifilm RAW Image: A legacy format used by older Fujifilm digital cameras. Like modern RAF files, these contain uncompressed sensor data. The primary problem is compatibility; modern image viewers (like Windows Photos) often fail to render them. Photographers convert these to JPG or TIFF to ensure the images remain accessible on modern devices.
