Convert UTX to another file type
To convert UTX texture packages to another format, you need Unreal Engine or other Game software.
Convert a file to UTX
To convert other file formats to the "Unreal Texture Archive" file type, you need software like Unreal Engine or a similar tool.
About UTX files
The .UTX file extension is a proprietary texture package format primarily used by the Unreal Engine. Classic video games built on Unreal Engine 1 and 2, such as Lineage II, Splinter Cell, and Unreal Tournament, use these archives to store 2D texture graphics like diffuse maps, normal maps, and UI elements.
Because it acts as a highly specialized binary container rather than a standard image format, a .UTX file cannot be opened directly by web browsers or typical image viewers. To open or modify these files, developers and modders traditionally rely on the original UnrealEd toolset or specialized community extraction software like UModel (Unreal Engine Viewer).
Users typically need to convert .UTX files when extracting game assets for modding, archival, or 3D rendering in external software like Blender. The major disadvantage of the .UTX format is its closed, proprietary nature. It locks visual assets inside a specific package that requires outdated game engine software to read, making standard access impossible.
The best conversion targets for the textures locked inside are PNG for lossless quality, DDS for direct hardware rendering, or JPG for lightweight web previews. Note that extracting textures to standard image formats will strip engine-specific metadata, such as baked mipmaps and proprietary texture group headers.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because it relies on proprietary Epic Games serialization. Standard online image converters fail completely when fed a .UTX file. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your UTX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert UTX file to EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP, SAV or DAT, you can use Unreal Engine or similar software from the "Game Texture Package Archive" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to UTX, try Unreal Engine or another comparable tool in the "Game Texture Package Archive" category.
The UTX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UTX converter.
