The .URS file format is a proprietary Universal Relay settings file developed by GE Multilin. These files store configuration parameters, logic settings, and operational data for electrical grid protection relays. Engineers use the specialized GE EnerVista software suite to create, read, and upload these settings directly to the physical hardware.
The primary disadvantage of a .URS file is its closed, proprietary nature. It cannot be opened by standard text editors, spreadsheets, or web browsers. Users without the heavy, specialized EnerVista software installed cannot read the relay configurations. This makes sharing settings with third-party contractors, auditors, or project managers extremely difficult and limits collaboration.
