About UPDATE files
The .UPDATE file extension serves two distinct, incompatible purposes that often confuse users. The most common variation is a software update package used by the Sitecore Content Management System (CMS). These files contain serialized data, configuration items, and code files required to upgrade a Sitecore instance. While they appear proprietary, they are frequently just renamed ZIP archives containing a specific directory structure. The second variation involves firmware binaries for hardware devices, such as Barco projectors or Behringer digital mixers (like the X18).
The key problem with .UPDATE files is their opacity; operating systems do not natively recognize them, and double-clicking usually results in an "Open With" error. For Sitecore users, the inability to easily inspect the contents before installation is a security and stability risk. You typically need a running Sitecore instance just to view what is inside. For hardware owners, these files are useless without the specific device or flashing utility, and attempting to edit them can corrupt the file, potentially "bricking" the hardware if applied.
Best Conversion Targets:
For Sitecore files, the most practical workflow is converting or renaming to ZIP. This allows you to extract the contents, audit config files, and view the internal manifest without launching the CMS. For firmware files, they cannot be converted to usable documents like PDF, but developers may convert them to TXT (Hex Dump) for analysis or verification purposes.
Convert.Guru analyzes your UPDATE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted BIN, TOT, QUP and PUP files.
The UPDATE Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UPDATE converter.
