The .UNL file format primarily serves two completely different purposes. Most frequently, it is an XML-based network simulation lab file used by EVE-NG (formerly Unified Networking Lab). Alternatively, it functions as a raw database table unload file generated by IBM Informix. Other niche uses include Czech Foreign Police (Ubyport) accommodation reports, Moroccan bank transfer orders, and Garmin GPS unlock files.
The main disadvantage of the .UNL format is its extreme fragmentation. Because multiple unrelated industries use the exact same file extension, operating systems cannot associate it with a single default program. If you double-click a .UNL file, your computer will not know how to open it. Furthermore, IBM Informix exports usually lack column headers, making the raw data difficult to interpret without the original database schema. Czech and Moroccan government .UNL files are strict, closed formats that cannot be edited without risking rejection by official portals.
If you need to extract data, the best target formats depend on the source file type. EVE-NG files can be safely renamed to XML or converted to TXT to read the topology configuration, though you will lose the graphical network interface. Informix database unloads are best converted to CSV using a pipe delimiter to restore a spreadsheet view.
