About UFD files

A .ufd file is most frequently a forensic data descriptor generated by Cellebrite UFED (Universal Forensic Extraction Device) software. These files act as the index or configuration map for raw mobile device memory dumps, typically accompanied by numbered BIN files containing the actual binary data from smartphones or tablets.

Because the format is proprietary and designed for strict chain-of-custody in legal investigations, .ufd files cannot be opened by standard consumer software. They require the licensed, often dongle-protected Cellebrite UFED Physical Analyzer to interpret the binary blobs. A common frustration is attempting to open a lone .ufd file without its accompanying BIN folder, which renders the file useless.

For legal teams and investigators who need to review this data without forensic software, the standard workflow involves using the UFED software to "convert" or generate a report into more accessible formats.

In rare legacy cases (approx. 6%), a .ufd file may be an Absolute Database single-file database used by Delphi developers. These require the Absolute Database engine or specific viewers to access the tables.

Convert.Guru analyzes your UFD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted UFDX, UDF, PDF, JPG, SCN and JFIF files.

The UFD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UFD converter.
