Convert a file to GKX

To convert other file formats to the "Financial Data File" file type, you need software like Quicken or a similar tool.

About GKX files

The .GKX file format is a proprietary data export generated by GainsKeeper, a tax-lot accounting tool owned by Wolters Kluwer. It is specifically structured to transfer investment transactions, capital gains, and complex wash-sale tax data into personal finance software like Quicken.

This format has significant disadvantages. It is a highly specialized, closed file type that lacks native support in standard spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel. Users are often locked into the Quicken ecosystem to view their raw financial data, which can be frustrating if you do not have an active, paid subscription.

To make this data accessible elsewhere, converting the .GKX file to standard financial data formats like CSV, QFX, or OFX is the best workaround. Converting to CSV allows you to audit the raw tax-lot data in any spreadsheet editor, though specific Quicken import tags might be discarded.

Because .GKX is a proprietary format, standard online converters generally fail to process it. Often, only the original Quicken software can properly read and parse the financial data. However, you can drag and drop your file into convert.guru to see what it is and convert it if supported. Our tool can inspect the file architecture and display text or internal content. If our analysis detects an underlying text-based structure like XML or delimited data, viewing or extracting the data to CSV may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GKX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ZIX, QSM and QDF files.

The GKX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GKX converter.
