About TTML files
A .TTML file is a subtitle and captioning file based on the Timed Text Markup Language standard developed by the W3C. Unlike simple caption formats, TTML is a highly structured XML document designed for the transcoding and exchange of timed text information across legacy and new media distribution platforms. It is the core format behind the captions seen on major streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and broadcast television. While robust, the XML syntax makes it verbose and difficult for humans to read or edit manually compared to simpler formats like SRT. Furthermore, many consumer video players and basic editing software (like older versions of Windows Media Player) lack native support for raw TTML files. Users frequently need to convert TTML to SRT (SubRip) for broad compatibility with desktop players like VLC Media Player or to VTT (WebVTT) for use in HTML5 web players. For archiving or script review, converting to PDF or TXT strips the timing tags, leaving just the readable dialogue.
