About TTE files

A .TTE file is an End-User Defined Character (EUDC) font file created by the Private Character Editor in Microsoft Windows. It stores custom characters, logos, or symbols that are not included in standard system fonts. Under the hood, it is structurally similar to a standard TrueType font file. Users typically create and edit these files using the hidden Windows Private Character Editor or third-party font tools like FontForge.

The primary disadvantage of the .TTE format is its highly restrictive, system-specific nature. These files are designed to work locally on a specific Windows installation and link to other installed fonts. Because of this, .TTE files do not display correctly on other operating systems like macOS or Linux, mobile devices, or web browsers. Sharing a document containing these private characters usually results in missing glyphs or blank boxes for the recipient.

To use these custom characters universally, you must convert the .TTE file to a standard font format like TTF (TrueType Font), OTF (OpenType Font), or WOFF (Web Open Font Format) for website usage. Be aware that during conversion, custom characters might remain mapped to the Private Use Area (PUA) of Unicode, which may require manual adjustment in a font editor later.

This file format is difficult to open or convert online because it is heavily tied to Windows registry internals and lacks standard character maps. Standard online converters often fail to process it. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show internal content. If our analysis detects the underlying TrueType structure, viewing or conversion may still be possible. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TTE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ZIP, JPG, PNG, PDF, ASPX, FFN, SFD and WOFF files.
