About TRL files
The .TRL file extension is heavily fragmented and serves completely different purposes depending on the software that created it. It is primarily used as an animation project file by Toon Boom Studio or as a GPS tracklog route file by Memory-Map. It is also frequently utilized as a game chapter resource file for titles like The Longest Journey, an OTDR trace list for KZO FiberCable, or eye-tracking trial data for SR Research EyeLink. Because multiple programs use the exact same extension for unrelated data types, identifying the correct source is the hardest part of managing these files. The main disadvantage of .TRL files is their proprietary nature and complete lack of universal compatibility. A Toon Boom .TRL file requires a specialized software license to open, and a Memory-Map .TRL file is useless in standard mapping tools like Google Maps or Garmin BaseCamp unless explicitly exported. Users often receive these files and find them totally inaccessible because they do not have the original software installed. For GPS data, you should immediately convert .TRL to standard GPX or KML formats for cross-platform mapping. If the file is a movie subtitle file, target standard SRT or VTT text formats. For animation files, true conversion to a video format like MP4 usually requires rendering directly inside Toon Boom Studio. Standard online converters universally fail to process .TRL files because they cannot guess which of the many variants you have uploaded. Because our analysis engine looks past the file extension, we can detect if your .TRL is secretly a standard underlying format like ZIP or Microsoft Compound, allowing you to view or extract embedded text, tracking data, or internal images even when other tools fail.
Convert.Guru analyzes your TRL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The TRL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TRL converter.
