The .TP2 file extension is primarily associated with WeiDU (Weimer's Dialogue Utility), a powerful tool used to modify Infinity Engine games like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale. These files serve as installation scripts containing code that tells the WeiDU installer how to patch game files, copy assets, and update dialogue strings. While they are essentially plain text, Windows and macOS do not natively recognize the extension, often leaving users staring at an "Open with..." prompt. A secondary, less common use is for Territorial Planning data generated by the IAS2-TP application, where the file structure is actually standard XML disguised with a custom extension.
The main frustration for users is accessibility. Because .TP2 files are technically just code, users frequently need to convert them to TXT to read the modification logic, check for errors, or manually verify installation paths without risking accidental execution. For the planning data variant, converting to XML restores the file's association with web browsers and data viewers.
