About TOR files

The .tor extension represents three distinct file types that cannot be opened with standard software.

  1. Star Wars: The Old Republic Asset Archive (Most Common): These are proprietary container files used by the MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) to store game data like audio, textures, and 3D models. You cannot "convert" the entire archive into a single viewable file. Instead, you must extract the specific internal components (e.g., converting internal WEM audio to OGG or MP3, or DDS textures to PNG) using specialized tools like EasyMyP or extracTOR.
  2. BitTorrent Metainfo File: Often a shortened or misnamed version of the standard TORRENT file. These small text-based files contain metadata for peer-to-peer downloads. If your torrent client (like uTorrent or qBittorrent) does not recognize the file, simply renaming the extension from .tor to torrent usually resolves the issue.
  3. OTDR Trace File: A technical data format defined by the Telcordia SR-4731 standard, used by Optical Time Domain Reflectometers to analyze fiber optic networks. Engineers often need to convert these trace files to PDF for reports or CSV for data analysis using software like Fiberizer or OTDR Viewer.
