A .TNL file is a media thumbnail cache generated by mobile operating systems or video editing software. The most frequent creators are Microsoft Windows Phone OS and GoPro Studio. These systems use the file to store small, low-resolution preview images of larger videos or photos, allowing the gallery interface to load quickly without rendering the full-size media. A rare variant of this extension is also used by Nintendo as a Super Mario Maker Course Thumbnail.
The primary disadvantage of the .TNL format is its proprietary obscurity. Standard image viewers, desktop operating systems like Windows 11 or macOS, and web browsers do not recognize the extension. Users cannot simply double-click to open them. Often, users discover these files when recovering data from an old SD card or phone backup and find themselves locked out of viewing the images because the extension acts as a barrier, even though the internal structure is often a standard raster image.
Under the hood, the vast majority of .TNL files are simply renamed JPG files. To make these images universally usable, conversion is required.
