The .tldr file extension is a drawing file created by tldraw, a popular open-source, collaborative digital whiteboard application. These files store vector strokes, shapes, text, and layout data in a structured JSON format. They are primarily used by software developers, designers, and remote teams for wireframing, architecture diagrams, and quick conceptual sketches.
You can open these files directly in the browser using the official tldraw web app or within integrated development environments like Visual Studio Code using official extensions.
The main disadvantage of the .tldr format is its lack of broad compatibility. Because it relies on a highly specific JSON schema optimized exclusively for the tldraw rendering engine, standard image viewers and professional vector graphic editors like Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape cannot open it. If you send a .tldr file to a client or colleague, they will be forced to use the tldraw web interface to view it, which creates unnecessary friction.
To share these drawings universally, you must convert them. The best target formats are SVG for lossless vector editing or PNG for rasterized viewing on any device. Exporting to PDF is also highly recommended for printing or document embedding. Be aware that converting to raster formats like PNG or JPG will result in the total loss of editable vector paths.
