About THN files
The .THN file format most commonly represents a thumbnail image used by legacy graphics editors like Dr. Halo or image management software such as ThumbsPlus. These files store small, low-resolution previews of larger images to speed up gallery loading times. A smaller subset of .THN files are used by the Bookeen Cybook Odyssey e-reader to store e-book cover thumbnails. In an entirely different context, the modern PC space simulator Star Citizen uses .THN files as game scene definition scripts written in the Lua programming language.
Users usually encounter problems with .THN files because they are either obsolete proprietary image formats or highly specific game assets. ThumbsPlus or Dr. Halo thumbnails are rarely supported by modern web browsers, default operating system image viewers, or mobile devices. They lack the universal compatibility of modern raster formats. For the gaming variant, standard text editors might not immediately recognize the extension, making the scripts harder to view or edit.
Converting .THN thumbnail files to standard JPG or PNG formats is the best approach if you need to recover or view the preview image. For Star Citizen scripts, renaming or converting the file to TXT or LUA makes them readable in standard IDEs or code editors. However, remember that graphic thumbnails will remain low-resolution - converting them will not magically restore the original high-resolution photo.
Because .THN can be a proprietary binary image cache or a plain text script, it is highly context-dependent and often difficult to open directly. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Our platform will inspect the internal content, determine if it is text or image data, and if a supported underlying format is detected, viewing or conversion will be enabled.
Convert.Guru analyzes your THN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert THN file to MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV, FLV, WEBM, MKV, M4V, 3GP, OGV, ASF or RM, you can use ThumbsPlus or similar software from the "Thumbnail Image Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MTS, MOV, RMVB, DIVX, RM, H264, TS, WMV, VOB, MP4, XVID or AVI files to THN, try ThumbsPlus or another comparable tool in the "Thumbnail Image Storage" category.
The THN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our THN converter.
