About THN files
A .THN file represents two completely different eras of computing. In most legacy contexts (approx. 62%), it is a thumbnail bitmap generated by Dr. Halo (a DOS-era graphics suite) or ThumbsPlus, a classic digital asset manager. These files serve as cached previews to speed up gallery loading; however, they are proprietary and cannot be opened by standard Windows or macOS photo viewers. Users often discover them in old backups and need to convert them to JPG or PNG to recover the visual data inside.
In modern contexts (approx. 15%), a .THN file is a Game Scene Definition script used by Star Citizen, the massive space simulator by Cloud Imperium Games. These are typically Lua-based scripts that define camera paths, cutscenes, and cinematic sequences. While they appear as unknown binary files to the operating system, they can often be treated as plain text. Users look to convert these to TXT to inspect game logic or mod cinematic parameters. A minor third use case involves the Bookeen Cybook Odyssey e-reader, which generates .THN files as cover previews.
Convert.Guru analyzes your THN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert THN file to MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV, FLV, WEBM, MKV, M4V, 3GP, OGV, ASF or RM, you can use ThumbsPlus or similar software from the "Thumbnail Cache Image" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MTS, MOV, RMVB, DIVX, RM, H264, TS, WMV, VOB, MP4, XVID or AVI files to THN, try ThumbsPlus or another comparable tool in the "Thumbnail Cache Image" category.
The THN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our THN converter.
