A .theme file serves two distinct but popular purposes depending on the device. Most commonly, it is a Microsoft Windows desktop settings file stored in a plain text INI format. However, a standard Windows .theme file is merely a pointer; it does not contain the actual image or audio files, but rather references file paths on your local drive. This is a major limitation when sharing: if you email a .theme file to a friend, they will likely see a default black background because they lack the referenced assets. To share a complete theme, users must typically use the themepack format instead.
The second major use case is found on mobile devices, specifically OPPO and Realme smartphones running ColorOS. Here, the file is actually a renamed ZIP archive containing UI assets like icons, lock screen images, and XML configurations. Users frequently run into issues trying to open these on a PC because the operating system does not recognize the extension as an archive.
