About THEME files
A .theme file serves two distinct but popular purposes depending on the device. Most commonly, it is a Microsoft Windows desktop settings file stored in a plain text INI format. These files allow users to personalize their workspace by defining color schemes, wallpapers, sounds, and cursors. However, a standard Windows .theme file is merely a pointer; it does not contain the actual image or audio files, but rather references file paths on your local drive. This is a major limitation when sharing: if you email a .theme file to a friend, they will likely see a default black background because they lack the referenced assets. To share a complete theme, users must typically use the themepack format instead.
The second major use case is found on mobile devices, specifically OPPO and Realme smartphones running ColorOS. Here, the file is actually a renamed ZIP archive containing UI assets like icons, lock screen images, and XML configurations. Users frequently run into issues trying to open these on a PC because the operating system does not recognize the extension as an archive.
Conversion Best Practices:
- For Windows Files: Convert to TXT to verify file paths or debug broken themes. Since the file contains no media, you cannot convert it directly to JPG or MP3 - you must locate the source files referenced within.
- For ColorOS/Android: The most practical conversion is to ZIP. This allows you to unzip the package and extract high-quality assets as PNG or JPG images for use in other design projects.
- For Linux/GNOME: These are text-based configuration files often found in the
/usr/share/themes/ directory, used to style GTK applications.
Convert.Guru analyzes your THEME file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted MSSTYLES, DESKTHEMEPACK, THEMEPACK, ATTHEME, JPG, GIF, JPEG, DOCX, PNG, MP4, ZIP, EXE and DAT files.
The THEME Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our THEME converter.
