Convert TERRAIN to another file type
To convert TERRAIN landscapes to another format, you need Minetest or other Game software.
Convert a file to TERRAIN
To convert other file formats to the "Voxel Game Terrain Data" file type, you need software like Minetest or a similar tool.
About TERRAIN files
A .terrain file is a proprietary game landscape data file. It is most commonly used to store voxel game terrain data in the Minetest game engine or heightmap environments in Jurassic World Evolution 2. These files dictate the exact 3D layout of the in-game world, including ground elevation, block placement, and biome boundaries.
Users often want to convert .terrain files into standard 3D formats like OBJ, FBX, or STL to render maps in external software like Blender or for 3D printing. The major disadvantage of the .terrain format is that it is heavily restricted and proprietary. Instead of standard polygonal geometry, it stores procedural generation seeds, chunk boundaries, and engine-specific material IDs. Files can easily exceed hundreds of megabytes and are completely unreadable by standard 3D software.
Standard online converters fail to process these files because interpreting the raw data requires the exact rendering algorithms of the original game engine. If you need a standard 3D mesh, your best target format is OBJ, but you must typically use community-built exporter scripts running directly inside the game. Be aware that complex textures and custom game shaders are usually lost during this export.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert externally. Emphasize that often only the original software can properly read or export the data. Since the Minetest variant is structurally a GZIP compressed archive, our analysis can detect the underlying format, allowing you to extract the raw binary data for deeper inspection.
Convert.Guru analyzes your TERRAIN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert TERRAIN file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use Minetest or similar software from the "Game terrain landscape data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to TERRAIN, try Minetest or another comparable tool in the "Game terrain landscape data" category.
The TERRAIN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TERRAIN converter.
