About T04 files

The .T04 extension is predominantly associated with proprietary GNSS raw data files generated by Trimble survey receivers, often recording static or kinematic GPS measurements. These files are binary and proprietary, meaning they are locked ecosystems that cannot be opened in standard text editors or GIS viewers like QGIS. A significant catch for surveyors and engineers is that .T04 files require specific conversion utilities (like Trimble's ConvertToRinex) to be usable in third-party processing software. Users often need to convert these to the industry-standard RINEX format for interoperability or to CSV for simple data visualization.

Alternatively, a .T04 file may be a legacy tax return created by Intuit TurboTax for the 2004 tax year. These files are effectively obsolete; opening them requires the specific 2004 version of the software, which is difficult to run on modern operating systems like Windows 11 without a virtual machine. For these files, the primary goal is archival: users urgently need to convert the proprietary data into PDF documents to preserve their financial records without maintaining 20-year-old software.
