The .t04 extension primarily represents two entirely different, highly specialized file formats: Trimble GNSS Raw Data files and 2004 Tax Return Data files. The most common use (roughly 50% of files) is by hardware and software from Trimble Inc. These .t04 files store raw Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) observation data collected by surveying equipment. You typically open these using Trimble Business Center or specific GPS processing utilities. Alternatively, .t04 files act as data saves for 2004 tax returns created in TurboTax by Intuit or TaxCut by H&R Block. Occasionally, the extension is also associated with forms generated by TQS structural analysis software.
These formats share severe practical disadvantages. Trimble data is proprietary and unreadable without specialized, expensive geospatial software. Converting it is strictly necessary for cross-platform workflows, often requiring export to .RINEX (Receiver Independent Exchange Format) for standard GPS analysis. On the other hand, the tax files are over two decades old; modern tax software cannot open them. Viewing a 2004 tax return requires a legacy 2004 version of TurboTax, which typically demands an older Windows operating system like Windows XP.
Because both major uses rely on closed, proprietary encoding or ancient software ecosystems, standard online converters consistently fail to process them.
