The .T02 file extension primarily identifies a Trimble GNSS Raw Observation Data file. It contains satellite tracking data (GPS, GLONASS) recorded in the field by Trimble surveying receivers. A secondary, but notable, application of the .T02 extension is for 2002 Tax Return files generated by legacy software like TurboTax, TaxAct, or H&R Block TaxCut.
The main disadvantage of the .T02 Trimble format is that it is a highly proprietary, closed binary format. It is designed to save storage space on field data collectors, but this prevents standard GIS applications and third-party photogrammetry tools from reading it directly. Users are often locked into an expensive software ecosystem, requiring heavy suites like Trimble Business Center just to parse the survey data. Similarly, .T02 tax files are practically obsolete; they cannot be imported into modern tax software and usually require 20-year-old applications running on outdated operating systems like Windows XP to open.
To make the data usable, .T02 GNSS files must be converted to .RINEX (Receiver Independent Exchange Format) or DAT. This standardizes the raw observation data for use in third-party surveying suites or online processing tools like OPUS. For legacy tax files, the only logical target is exporting them to PDF for long-term document archiving.
Because these are strictly closed formats, standard online converters routinely fail to process them. You cannot simply convert a compiled 2002 tax database or a proprietary binary GNSS stream with a generic tool.
