Extract text from 3D surface files (SURF)

The .SURF file extension is a classic example of a filename collision, primarily representing Amira-Avizo 3D surface geometry or Nemetschek Allplan surface textures.
For scientists and researchers, the Amira .SURF file (often called HyperSurface) contains triangular mesh data used to visualize complex 3D structures like biological tissue or geological formations. A major limitation here is the proprietary nature of the Amira-Avizo software; sending this file to a colleague without the software renders it useless. These files are not natively supported by standard 3D tools like Blender or typical 3D printers. To make the geometry usable, you generally need to convert it to OBJ or STL formats, which universalizes the mesh for editing, printing, or archiving.
Alternatively, if you are an architect using Nemetschek Allplan, the .SURF file is likely a raster-based surface definition used for rendering materials (like brick or wood textures). While these files often contain standard TIFF image data, they are locked into the CAD environment. Converting these to standard PNG or JPG files allows you to use the textures in other rendering engines or simply view them without launching a heavy CAD suite.
Less commonly, .SURF files act as simple configuration text files for simulators like OMSI or data exports from Anton Paar analysis tools. In these cases, the file is virtually inaccessible to standard viewers unless you recognize it as XML or plain text.
