About SUM files

The .sum file extension is primarily used for Summary logs or Checksum validation files. Because "sum" is a generic abbreviation for "summary" or "summation," dozens of distinct, unrelated applications generate .sum files. Major enterprise use cases include Electronic Design Automation (EDA) summary logs from Siemens Xpedition, CFD simulation results from Autodesk CFD, and transportation models from Citilabs Cube. On the software development side, .sum files act as cryptographic checksum databases, most notably the go.sum file used by the Go Programming Language to verify module dependencies. Other uses include activity checksums from Garmin Connect and hash validation files for 7-Zip or Avast Antivirus.

Depending on their origin, these files are usually plain text, UTF-8, or structured JSON. While you can open most with a robust text editor like Notepad++, the primary disadvantage of a .sum format is its extreme ambiguity. Windows and macOS generally do not know which application should open it. Furthermore, if the file is a massive simulation log exceeding hundreds of megabytes, attempting to open it in a basic text editor will likely crash your system. The raw, unformatted data is also incredibly difficult to share with non-technical stakeholders who do not have the native engineering software installed.

To make this data readable, structured, and shareable, conversion is the most practical workaround. If your .sum file contains tabular simulation results, convert it to CSV or XLSX to easily filter the data in Microsoft Excel. For archiving and generating professional reports, convert to PDF. For quick web viewing, convert to a standard TXT file. Note: If your file is a checksum (like go.sum or a SHA-1 hash), it is meant for system verification. Converting it will alter its cryptographic utility.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SUM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The SUM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SUM converter.
