About SUMMARY files

The .summary file extension is a generic text or data container used by various software to store overview statistics, metadata, or log reports. The most common uses include Microsoft Excel document summary information (often encoded in UTF-16 BE) and genomic feature count summaries generated by Subread featureCounts. It is also utilized by the mothur bioinformatics software for taxonomic classifications, the Financial Information eXchange (FIX) protocol for session logs, and Fluxim Paios for solar cell measurement metadata. The primary disadvantage of a .SUMMARY file is its lack of standardization. Because it is used by entirely different, niche scientific and financial programs, your operating system will not know which software to use to open it. Double-clicking it usually results in an error. Opening an Excel UTF-16 summary in a basic text editor might display unreadable characters, while genomic summaries require data parsing to be useful. To make this data readable and shareable, you must convert it. For data analysis and spreadsheet import, convert to CSV or XLSX. For broad text readability, convert to TXT. If you need to archive the summary report, convert to PDF.
