.STZ files are compressed archive packages used in highly specific, niche applications. Primarily, they function as Automotive Stimulus Data Packages generated by dSPACE and AVL CAMEO. In the video game industry, they operate as Sonic Team Zip containers to hold game assets, textures, and 3D models for titles like Team Sonic Racing, Super Monkey Ball, and SuperTuxKart. Occasionally, the extension is also used for compressed AMD driver packages. To open these files properly, users typically require the original software, such as AVL CAMEO, or community-built reverse-engineering modding tools. However, because many of these files are simply renamed ZIP or self-extracting EXE files, robust extraction utilities like 7-Zip can sometimes access their contents. The .STZ format is frustrating for end-users because it is an obscure, proprietary extension that actively hides its true file structure.
