The .SSM extension is a classic example of a filename collision, representing three distinct, incompatible data types that often confuse users. The most common variation is a Spectroscopy Scope Mode data file generated by Ocean Insight (formerly Ocean Optics) SpectraSuite software. These files contain spectral data captured from optical sensing instruments used in chemical analysis. A major limitation is that these files are designed for the proprietary SpectraSuite environment, making it difficult to analyze raw data in third-party tools like Microsoft Excel, MATLAB, or Python without first converting them to universal formats like CSV or TXT.
Another frequent use of the format is in industrial safety engineering, where it serves as a project file for SISTEMA (Safety Integrity Software Tool for the Evaluation of Machine Applications). These are actually structured XML files used to calculate the probability of failure for machine control systems. While excellent for compliance, sharing a raw .SSM project with a client who lacks the software is ineffective; for distribution and archiving, these should typically be converted to PDF reports.
Finally, legacy mobile users may encounter .SSM files created by the Samsung S Memo app on older Galaxy devices. These proprietary containers often lock valuable notes and sketches inside an obsolete format. To recover this content, the best workflow is converting the file to standard image formats like JPG or PNG.
