About SSK files
The .SSK file extension serves two distinct but related purposes: it is primarily a skin archive for Windows Media Player (often created via Stardock SkinStudio) or a visual theme for the productivity tool Stickies.
The Problem: Users often find old .SSK files and cannot view them because they are proprietary containers. For Stickies users, the file is simply a locked ZIP archive containing images and XML configuration data, but the unique extension prevents standard tools from opening it. For Windows Media Player users, the file is a legacy skin definition that modern media players often fail to recognize or render correctly.
The Solution:
For Stickies Files: The most practical conversion is to rename the extension from .SSK to .ZIP. This allows you to open the file with any archiver (like 7-Zip) and extract the internal BMP or JPG assets and configuration scripts.
For WMP/Stardock Files: These are best viewed by installing the original software or SkinStudio. Converting them is difficult without the original authoring tools, but they can sometimes be treated as archives to recover graphic assets.
Legacy Note: A small percentage (0.9%) of these files are vector drawings from SmartSketch (the precursor to Flash), which are incompatible with skin converters.

The SSK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SSK converter.
