About SONG files

The .song file extension is primarily used by PreSonus Studio One as a core project container. It stores multi-track arrangement data, MIDI sequences, plugin settings, and automation curves. Other software like older versions of Apple GarageBand, UltraStar, and AudioSauna also use the .song extension, often saving project metadata as standard XML.

This format is strictly proprietary and highly limited for distribution. The biggest disadvantage of a .song file is that it does not contain any actual audio. Instead, it relies on absolute file paths to locate external audio tracks (like WAV or AIF) on your local hard drive. If you send a .song file to someone else without the accompanying media folder, they will open a blank, silent project. Furthermore, you cannot play a .song file in a standard media player. You must own a Studio One license or a compatible Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) just to read the project structure.

To share your music, you must export or convert the project into universal audio formats. For web streaming and quick sharing, convert the project to MP3 or AAC. For professional mastering, archival, or CD burning, convert to lossless formats like WAV or FLAC. If you are migrating your sessions to another DAW like Ableton Live or Logic Pro, export the raw MIDI data as MID alongside audio stems. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.
