Extract text from Audition sessions (SESX)
To convert SESX sessions to another format, you need Adobe_Audition or other Audio software.
To convert other file formats to the "DAW Project File" file type, you need software like Adobe_Audition or a similar tool.
A .SESX file is the native project format for Adobe Audition (CS 5.5 and later), used to store multitrack sessions. It is strictly an XML-based container that saves the roadmap of your audio project - including track layout, mixer settings, automation envelopes, and effects parameters - but it does not contain the actual audio data itself. A common difficulty for users is attempting to play a .SESX file in a standard media player or sending only this file to a client; without the referenced source recordings (usually WAV or AIF files) located in the exact same file paths, the session will open with "Media Offline" errors. Furthermore, because the format is proprietary to the Adobe Creative Cloud ecosystem, opening it typically requires a paid monthly subscription.
To share your work or move it to another environment, you must convert or export the session data. For transferring projects to other DAWs like Pro Tools or Logic Pro, the industry standard is to convert the session to OMF (Open Media Framework) or Final Cut Pro XML. For web playback or client review, you cannot "convert" the SESX directly; you must render a "Multitrack Mixdown" to a compressed format like MP3 or AAC. For archiving or mastering, the target format should always be high-fidelity WAV or FLAC. If you simply need to recover metadata or file paths from a corrupted session without opening Audition, the file's XML structure allows it to be viewed in text editors like Notepad++.
