About SOF files

The .SOF file extension primarily represents an SRAM Object File created by Intel Quartus Prime (formerly Altera Quartus). These files store compiled hardware configuration data used to program SRAM-based Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). The main disadvantage of the Quartus .SOF format is that it is a proprietary, closed binary file. You cannot open it natively on standard operating systems, and it requires a multi-gigabyte download of the Quartus software just to read or transfer the data to a device. Furthermore, the format is strictly hardware-specific and volatile. Developers often need to convert .SOF files into generic, non-volatile programming formats like POF (Programmer Object File), JIC, HEX, or BIN using the Quartus Convert Programming File tool. Standard online converters fail to process these FPGA configurations because they lack the proprietary Intel compilation libraries. Secondary uses of the .SOF extension include an XML-based Summary of Findings table used by MAGICapp and GRADEpro, and a zipped XML Standard Order Format file used by The Vision Council.
