Convert JIC to another file type

To convert JIC configuration files to another format, you need Intel Quartus Prime or other Developer software.

Convert a file to JIC

To convert other file formats to the "FPGA Configuration File" file type, you need software like Intel Quartus Prime or a similar tool.

About JIC files

The .jic file is primarily a JTAG Indirect Configuration file used by Intel Quartus Prime (formerly Altera). Hardware developers use it to store programming bitstreams that configure serial memory devices, such as EPCS or EPCQ flash chips, attached to an FPGA.

You must use Intel Quartus Prime to create and deploy these files. The main disadvantage of the .jic format is that it is highly proprietary and hardware-specific. It is a compiled binary bitstream. It requires a massive, complex software suite to manage, and you cannot edit it in a standard text editor. If you lose the original SOF (SRAM Object File) or project source code, you cannot reverse-engineer the .jic file to recover your logic.

Users occasionally need to convert .jic files into generic raw binary (BIN) or hexadecimal (HEX) formats to use custom flashing tools or third-party device programmers. During this process, you only extract the raw machine code; all project hierarchy is absent.

Because .jic is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters fail to process it. Only the original Quartus software can properly read or export the programming data. However, just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible using convert.guru. Even if full conversion fails, our tool can inspect the binary header to confirm it is a valid Intel bitstream and show any embedded plain-text metadata.

Convert.Guru analyzes your JIC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted JPEG, VWF, VHDL and EFI files.

FAQ

If you want to convert JIC file to ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB, ACE, ARJ or LHA, you can use Intel Quartus Prime or similar software from the "FPGA Hardware Configuration Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to JIC, try Intel Quartus Prime or another comparable tool in the "FPGA Hardware Configuration Storage" category.

The JIC Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JIC converter.
