About JIC files
A .JIC file is a JTAG Indirect Configuration file used primarily in FPGA development with Intel Quartus Prime software. It is a binary format designed to program Serial Configuration Devices (such as EPCS, EPCQ, or QSPI flash memory) attached to an Intel (formerly Altera) FPGA.
The "Indirect" in the name refers to the programming method: the JTAG cable connects to the FPGA, which is temporarily configured as a bridge to write the data into the external flash memory. This contrasts with direct programming files like POF or volatile SRAM files like SOF.
Common Friction Points:
Users often struggle with .JIC files because they are proprietary binaries that cannot be opened in text editors or standard viewers. A common challenge is extracting the raw binary data for use with third-party programmers or custom bootloaders. Since the .JIC file contains proprietary headers and framing instructions specific to the Quartus Programmer, it is not suitable for direct burning via generic SPI programmers without stripping this metadata.
Best Conversion Targets:
- For External Programmers: Convert (or regenerate) to RPD (Raw Programming Data) or HEX to get a clean bitstream without JTAG headers.
- For Manufacturing: Use POF if your programmer supports it directly.
- For Debugging: Regenerate the file from the source SOF to ensure correct device settings.
Convert.Guru analyzes your JIC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted JPEG, VWF, VHDL and EFI files.
The JIC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JIC converter.
