These files are actually standard GIF images disguised with an obsolete extension. Another major use is for Standard ML source code, which is plain text readable in compilers like SML/NJ. Other variations include Sensor Model Language files (which are standard XML data), Stick Nodes stick figure animations, and even game mod packages. Users need to convert these files because the .SML extension is rarely recognized natively by operating systems, image viewers, or web browsers, leaving users unable to view their academic graphics or code.
