About SMDL files

SMDL (Semantic Model Definition Language) files are XML-based definitions used by legacy versions of Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS). These files act as an abstraction layer, mapping complex physical database structures to user-friendly terms (entities and relationships) so business users can generate ad-hoc reports in tools like Report Builder 1.0.

The primary issue with .SMDL files is their obsolescence. Microsoft has largely moved toward Tabular models and Power BI datasets, leaving SMDL as a "dead" format that modern BI tools often refuse to import directly. Users are frequently stuck with these files during migration projects, unable to view the underlying logic because they lack the specific, outdated SQL Server components required to render them visually. Furthermore, because they are proprietary schemas wrapped in XML, they look like gibberish to standard document viewers.

For most users, the goal is data liberation: retrieving the schema logic without spinning up a 2008-era server. The most practical workflow is converting .SMDL to standard XML or TXT to inspect the table mappings and relationships in any text editor. for archiving or sharing the data model structure with non-technical stakeholders, converting to PDF ensures the code structure remains visible and printable.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SMDL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DSV, NDF and TRC files.

The SMDL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SMDL converter.
