About SMDL files

The .SMDL file extension primarily acts as a Semantic Model Definition Language file. It is utilized by Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) to describe the metadata of a SQL database. This file bridges the gap between complex database schemas and end-user report creation tools like Report Builder. A minor secondary use is as a 3D Skinned Model file for classic console games developed by Retro Studios.

The major disadvantage of the .SMDL format is its proprietary dependency. It requires a live, configured SQL Server environment to render any usable data. It does not store actual report results, only the relational model and entity mapping in an underlying XML structure. Users without enterprise-level SQL installations find these files extremely difficult to use, and standard web browsers cannot parse them into a readable format.

If you need to extract the structure, the best target formats are XML, TXT, or JSON. Converting the raw schema text preserves the table names, attributes, and relationships, though all live database connection functions will be lost outside of the server environment.

Because this is a highly specific schema definition format, standard online converters fail to process it. They attempt to render it as a visual document rather than translating the underlying data models. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the complex SQL schema. Still, just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible using convert.guru. If our analysis detects the underlying UTF-8 or XML structure, viewing the code or converting it to raw text is entirely possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SMDL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DSV, NDF and TRC files.

The SMDL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SMDL converter.
