About SMALL files
The .small file extension is not a standardized format, but rather an arbitrary suffix appended by custom software, web servers, or digital cameras (such as those by Nikon) to identify a lower-resolution version of a standard media file. Analysis shows that the internal file format used in these files is typically an MP4 video (ISO Base Media Format), a PNG image, or a JPG image (JFIF).
The main disadvantage of a .small file is that it breaks native operating system file associations. Because the extension is non-standard, systems like Windows or macOS do not know which application to use. Consequently, native tools like Apple QuickTime Player or default image viewers will fail to open them, throwing an error instead. Users are forced to manually guess the underlying format to regain access to their data.
Standard online converters usually fail to process .small files because they rely strictly on the file extension to determine the MIME type. When they encounter an unrecognized extension, they immediately reject the upload. Just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the true format, view its internal header, and convert it when possible. Our platform bypasses the extension entirely, analyzing the internal file signature (magic number) to detect if the file is a disguised video or raster image, enabling seamless recovery and conversion to standard JPG, PNG, or MP4 targets.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SMALL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The SMALL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SMALL converter.
