About CAPS files

The .caps file is a proprietary offline database archive used by CaptureServer, a research tool developed by GoldGingko Software. This format is designed to download and bundle complete webpages, text snippets, and images into a single localized container for offline cataloging and viewing.

Users frequently need to convert .caps files because the format is entirely closed-source and ties your research data to outdated, niche software. If you want to share your collected research with a colleague or access it on a modern mobile device, a .caps file is practically useless without installing CaptureServer. The proprietary nature of the file prevents standard web browsers or document viewers from reading it, essentially locking your data away.

The most practical target formats for a .caps file are ZIP (to extract the raw files), HTML (to view the pages in a browser), or PDF (for universal document sharing). However, converting this format is notoriously difficult because the internal database structure is not publicly documented. Standard online converters cannot parse the proprietary schema and will simply reject the upload. Our system will scan the binary structure of the .caps container to determine if embedded text, web links, or raw images can be safely extracted without needing the original software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CAPS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The CAPS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CAPS converter.
