About DEAD files

A .dead file is primarily a system marker generated by the Squirrel.Windows installation framework. It is used by Electron-based applications to indicate that an app was uninstalled, but its directory could not be entirely deleted. Occasionally, .dead files are also found as legacy disk archives from the classic Apple II operating system or as placeholders for unused assets in video game development. You can usually inspect these files using basic text editors like Notepad++. Users often encounter .dead files in their AppData folders and attempt to convert them to recover lost data. The main disadvantage of this format is that it is usually a 0-byte file containing absolutely no usable information. It is a proprietary, silent flag used strictly by the installer engine, and attempting to force it into standard formats is inherently flawed. If your file does contain data (such as a legacy Apple II archive), your best conversion targets are TXT for raw data extraction or BIN for preservation. Keep in mind that formatting and metadata will be lost when extracting raw text from legacy software archives. This file format is difficult to open or convert because standard document converters automatically reject zero-byte files or unrecognized binary headers. Often, only the original software or a hex editor can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DEAD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BITMAP, INPUT and BLAST files.

The DEAD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DEAD converter.
