About SKV files
The .SKV file extension is most commonly associated with Swedish tax account transaction files generated by Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency). These files contain exported financial data, tax records, and transaction histories used by Swedish businesses for accounting and auditing purposes. Alternatively, .SKV is also used as a generic Semicolon Separated Values file. This format is functionally identical to a standard CSV but strictly uses semicolons as delimiters to prevent conflicts in regions where commas act as decimal separators. Rarely, the extension is also used for XLANG Schedule Drawing files in older Microsoft developer environments.
The main disadvantage of the .SKV format is its strict, localized schema and uncommon file extension. When users attempt to open an .SKV directly in standard spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets, it frequently results in formatting errors. Because standard programs expect comma delimiters, the data is often incorrectly dumped into a single column unless the user manually intervenes.
The best conversion targets for .SKV files are CSV (Comma-Separated Values), XLSX (Excel Spreadsheet), or TXT (Plain Text). Converting to XLSX makes the data easier to read, preserves alphanumeric values without corruption, and allows for immediate column filtering.
Because the tax transaction variant relies on specific formatting codes established by the Swedish Tax Agency, specialized accounting software is often required to natively interpret the actual meaning of the columns. Standard online converters frequently fail to parse these specific headers or handle regional character encoding (like UTF-8 vs ANSI) correctly.

The SKV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SKV converter.
