Convert SHM to another file type
To convert SHM Memory files to another format, you need GOM Inspect or other 3D software.
Convert a file to SHM
To convert other file formats to the "Optical Measurement Data" file type, you need software like GOM Inspect or a similar tool.
About SHM files
The .shm file extension is primarily used for two completely different purposes: proprietary 3D optical measurement data (Shape Model) and internal database shared memory files. In the 3D scanning and metrology context, .shm files are created by specialized software like GOM Inspect or Creaform 3D. They store highly precise 3D surface measurements, point clouds, and mesh data generated by optical scanners.
These 3D files are heavily restricted. They are proprietary, meaning standard 3D modeling or CAD software cannot natively open them. Users typically need to convert these files into universal formats like STL, OBJ, or PLY to use the 3D models in standard workflows. However, this conversion usually must be done directly within the original software to prevent the loss of exact dimensional accuracy and metrology metadata.
In the database context, a .shm file is a temporary system file created by the SQLite engine when operating in Write-Ahead Logging (WAL) mode. It serves strictly as a shared memory index for the accompanying wal file. It contains no human-readable data, cannot be converted into anything else, and should not be manually opened.
Because of the proprietary nature of the 3D models and the internal system-level function of the database files, standard online converters will fail to process them. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SHM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SHM file to VCD, you can use GOM Inspect or similar software from the "3D Scanning & Database Index" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert files to SHM, try GOM Inspect or another comparable tool in the "3D Scanning & Database Index" category.
The SHM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SHM converter.
