About SGML files

The .SGML file extension denotes a document created using the Standard Generalized Markup Language (ISO 8879), the complex ancestor of both HTML and XML. While historically critical for heavy industrial documentation (like aircraft maintenance manuals), government records (such as SEC EDGAR filings), and academic text corpora, SGML presents significant hurdles today. Unlike modern web formats, .SGML files are not natively supported by web browsers like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. They often rely on external Document Type Definitions (DTD) to structure content, meaning a standalone .SGML file might appear as a messy mix of tags and text without the correct stylesheet or parser. Users frequently encounter these files when digging through legacy archives or migrating enterprise data systems like PTC Arbortext or Adobe FrameMaker. To make the content usable, editing environments generally require converting .SGML to XML for modern data processing, HTML for web viewing, or PDF for fixed-layout archiving. Occasionally, this extension is used by Nemetschek Allplan for CAD element data, complicating the format identification process.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SGML file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SGM, ZIP, TAR, PDF, XLSX, MIF, FM, BK and XML files.

The SGML Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SGML converter.
