About SGML files

The .SGML file extension stands for Standard Generalized Markup Language, a highly complex, legacy text standard defined by ISO 8879. These files contain document structure rules and data tags, functioning as the architectural blueprint from which modern languages like HTML and XML evolved. Common use cases include enterprise technical documentation (often formatted via DocBook), SEC EDGAR corporate filings, CAD element data from Nemetschek Allplan, and annotated linguistic corpuses. Professional enterprise tools like Arbortext Editor and OmniMark traditionally handle these documents. The main disadvantage of .SGML is its obsolescence and extreme complexity. Modern web browsers do not support it natively. Opening an SGML file requires referencing an external Document Type Definition (DTD). If the DTD is missing, the file is nearly impossible to parse automatically. Furthermore, legacy SGML authoring tools are often prohibitively expensive enterprise suites. Consequently, users frequently face frustrating roadblocks when trying to view, share, or edit old technical manuals or regulatory filings. To modernize these documents, conversion is mandatory. For web publishing and broad compatibility, convert to HTML. For modern data exchange and easier structural editing, convert to XML. If the goal is long-term archiving or printing, converting to PDF is the best choice. Our tool extracts the text and translates the tags - free, online, and without requiring a costly legacy software installation.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SGML file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SGM, ZIP, TAR, PDF, XLSX, MIF, FM, BK and XML files.

The SGML Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SGML converter.
