The .SG file extension is a highly fragmented, multi-purpose format. Its most common technical application is as a structural analysis model created by Space Gass, a specialized engineering software. Other frequent uses include legacy SnapGrafx or SmartDraw flowcharts, IBM SPSS Statistics graph files, and even compressed game data archives or save files for the Disciples video game series.
Handling .SG files is notoriously frustrating because they lack a unified standard. Space Gass models are highly proprietary and require expensive, specialized software to open natively, locking your structural data behind a licensing paywall. SPSS graphs similarly demand an active IBM software installation. Because these files are closed binary formats or heavily compressed archives (Space Gass internally uses standard ZIP compression, while some game files use FreeArc), standard web browsers and basic document editors cannot read them.
