About API files

Most .api files are Adobe Acrobat plug-ins. Under the hood, these are compiled Windows executable (EXE) binaries designed to add specific tools or features to the PDF reader software. Other common uses include storing raw JSON data returned from web applications, zipped business data archives, or game mod scripting documentation for Grand Theft Auto V.

The major disadvantage of the .api format is its severe fragmentation. Because the extension is used by wildly different applications, the operating system rarely knows how to handle it automatically. Compiled plug-in files are highly restricted, proprietary binaries. They cannot be opened natively by web browsers, and attempting to edit them in a text editor usually breaks the file's executable signature. Raw JSON or Japanese Bankers Association .api files are readable text, but they often lack a user-friendly layout for non-technical users.

If your file is a text-based API response, the best conversion targets are CSV, JSON, or TXT for spreadsheet analysis and readability. However, compiled executable plug-ins are practically impossible to convert into documents because they are specialized machine-code blobs. Standard online converters will fail completely on these proprietary files. Our platform can inspect the file's hex signature to determine if it is a compiled binary or structured text, helping you safely extract internal strings or embedded archives.

Convert.Guru analyzes your API file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted YAML, JSON, SEQU, MJS, PYX, MCP, SG, PDF and SDK files.

The API Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our API converter.
