About SFL files
The .SFL file extension is most commonly associated with Sound Forge Peak Data files, originally developed by Sony and now maintained by MAGIX. These files are automatically generated alongside source audio files (like WAV or MP3) when opened in Sound Forge or Vegas Pro. They do not contain actual audio data. Instead, they store a visual representation (the UI waveform data) of the audio track. This allows the editing software to load visual waveforms instantly without recalculating the peaks every time. The primary disadvantage of this format is confusion: users frequently mistake .SFL files for playable media and waste time trying to convert them to audio formats.
Alternatively, .SFL files serve as macOS Shared File Lists within Apple's operating systems. Managed by macOS Launch Services, these files are binary property lists (plist) that store local user data such as "Recent Items," sidebar favorites, and server histories. Their main drawback is that they are stored as compiled binary data, making them unreadable outside of Apple's developer environment without specialized tools.
Because .SFL files are either proprietary supplemental caches or system-level configuration binaries, standard online document converters consistently fail to process them. You cannot convert a Sound Forge .SFL file to an MP3, but converting an Apple .SFL list to XML or TXT is highly useful for system forensics and troubleshooting. Just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify its exact origin, inspect its internal structure, and convert it when supported by the underlying format.

The SFL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SFL converter.
