About SCD files
The .SCD file extension serves multiple, entirely distinct purposes, making it notoriously confusing for users to handle. Primarily, it operates as a Supreme Commander Data file used by the video game Supreme Commander. Under the hood, these are actually standard ZIP archives that contain essential game assets like textures, audio, and scripts. Another major professional use is the Substation Configuration Description format. These are XML-based engineering files used to define the layout and automation of electrical substations under the IEC 61850 international standard. Minor, often obsolete uses include old Microsoft Schedule+ calendar files, Windows Media Player cache files, Square Enix audio containers, and Pioneer car stereo firmware.
The primary disadvantage of the .SCD format is its extreme ambiguity. Your operating system cannot guess which specific variant you have. Game archives require manual renaming or third-party extraction tools. Substation files technically require expensive engineering software like SCL Editor to parse properly. Old Microsoft Schedule+ files are functionally dead, completely unsupported by modern Microsoft Office environments.
To overcome these hurdles, conversion or extraction is usually necessary. For game modding, extract the .SCD file to ZIP or 7Z to access the internal directory structure. For electrical engineering data, convert the file to XML or CSV to allow easy parsing in spreadsheet software or text editors. The SCD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SCD converter.
