The .SCD extension serves two distinct, incompatible ecosystems: industrial automation and PC gaming. Most critically, it functions as a Substation Configuration Description file, complying with the IEC 61850 standard. These are heavy XML text files used to define the topology and communications of electrical substations. While readable in a text editor, the raw data is dense and hierarchical, making it difficult for engineers to validate configurations without expensive, proprietary software like Helinks STS. Users frequently need to convert these complex XML structures into PDF for regulatory documentation or XLSX spreadsheets to audit signal lists and IP addresses outside of the engineering environment.
Alternatively, .SCD files are game data archives for titles like Supreme Commander. The solution is often to convert (or rename) the file to ZIP to extract its contents.
