About RWX files

The .RWX (RenderWare Script) file is a legacy 3D geometry format originally developed by Criterion Software. Unlike modern binary mesh formats, .RWX files are ASCII text scripts that define vertices, polygons, and material properties procedurally. They were heavily utilized in the RenderWare engine, powering iconic 90s and early 2000s titles, and remain the primary building block for the Active Worlds metaverse platform.

While readable in a text editor, this format presents significant friction for modern 3D workflows. Because it is a script rather than a standardized mesh, most contemporary tools like Blender or Unity cannot natively import .RWX files without obscure, unmaintained community plugins. Users often find themselves locked out of their own assets, unable to edit geometry or apply PBR textures. Furthermore, as an ASCII format, .RWX files are inefficiently large compared to binary equivalents, making them poor candidates for modern web use or game development.

To modernize these assets, it is highly recommended to convert .RWX files to widely supported interchange formats. For editing and UV mapping, convert to OBJ or FBX. For use in modern web-based 3D viewers, GLTF or GLB is the standard. If you encounter a .RWX file that contains data columns rather than 3D coordinates, you likely have a raw datalog from Biometrics Ltd hardware; in this case, converting to CSV or XLSX is necessary for analysis in spreadsheet software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RWX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted OBJ, PLY, STP and OSGB files.

FAQ

If you want to convert RWX file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use Active Worlds or similar software from the "3D Scene Scripting" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to RWX, try Active Worlds or another comparable tool in the "3D Scene Scripting" category.

The RWX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RWX converter.
