The .RL2 file extension has several highly specialized uses, most notably as a Realms of Arkania Savegame, a Reallusion Character File, or a vintage Voyeur Game Video File. In all cases, it is a closed, proprietary format designed exclusively for its native engine. The Voyeur video variation, for instance, contains video data compressed with archaic Run-Length Encoding (RLE) and uncompressed audio, making it completely unsupported by modern web browsers or standard media players.
To open these files, you generally need the original software. Savegames require the classic DOS RPG Realms of Arkania. Video files can be processed with the command-line tool FFmpeg, and 3D characters require Reallusion animation software.
Users typically want to convert .RL2 files because they are effectively dead-end formats outside of their original environment. Savegames cannot be converted to readable documents like PDF or TXT, though they can be hex-edited. The 1993 video files are practically unusable today unless converted. For the video files, your best conversion targets are MP4 or MKV, which restore playback compatibility on modern devices like VLC or smartphones. For 3D characters, you must export them from Reallusion to standard FBX or OBJ files to use them in engines like Unity or Blender.
