The .rl2 extension represents a collision of legacy gaming and 3D graphics formats, creating significant confusion for users. Most commonly, it is a Realms of Arkania Savegame, a binary data file containing player progress from the classic 1990s RPG Blade of Destiny, developed by Attic Entertainment Software. These files are proprietary, non-human-readable, and designed exclusively for the MS-DOS environment, making them impossible to open with modern text editors or standard media players.

Alternatively, the file may be a Voyeur Game Video, a specialized Raster Image/Video format used in the interactive movie game Voyeur. These files use a custom Run-Length Encoding (RLE) algorithm to store Full Motion Video (FMV) sequences. Finally, in rare legacy contexts, the extension has been associated with early Reallusion 3D character data. Users typically encounter these files when archiving retro games or recovering old 3D assets.

Practical Constraints:

Incompatibility: Neither Windows nor macOS natively supports .rl2 files.
Fragmentation: You cannot determine if the file is a save game or a video without inspecting the binary header or knowing the source folder.
