About HXM files

The .HXM file primarily functions as a Hexagonal grid map file. It is used extensively by tabletop RPG players and Game Masters to design, store, and edit campaign maps. Under the hood, these files rely on a UTF-16 (BE) text-based structure to save terrain types, custom icons, and map coordinates rather than actual image pixels. These files are natively associated with Hexographer, a legacy mapping tool created by Inkwell Ideas, though the format is also occasionally linked to old Resource Modification files for the 1996 video game Descent 2. Users frequently need to convert .HXM files because the format is entirely proprietary. A raw .HXM file is useless to anyone who does not have the specific mapping software installed. You cannot embed it in a virtual tabletop (VTT), view it on a mobile device, or share it easily with players. It locks your creative map data into a closed, specialized ecosystem. The best conversion targets for a map are standard raster images like PNG or JPG for online sharing, or PDF for high-resolution printing. Be aware that exporting to an image flattens the data; you will lose the underlying grid coordinates and the ability to edit individual terrain hexes. This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert online. Because it contains coordinate instructions rather than standard visual data, normal image converters cannot process it. Often, only the original Hexographer software can properly read and visually render the tiles. However, just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, inspect the raw internal text content, and see what it is. If our analysis detects any embedded supported text or metadata, viewing or partial conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your HXM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MSN, POG and RD1 files.

The HXM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HXM converter.
