About HXM files

HXM files are primarily Hexagonal Grid Maps generated by Hexographer, a Java-based mapping tool developed by Inkwell Ideas. These files store complex terrain data, label placements, and grid configurations used by Game Masters for tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons or Pathfinder. A significantly rarer variant (less than 1%) involves resource modification files for the 1996 game Descent 2.

While .HXM files are essential for editing map layers, they present significant friction for sharing and distribution. The format is effectively locked to the Hexographer ecosystem or its successor, Worldographer. Opening them requires a functioning Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and the specific software installed, which is a major hurdle for players or collaborators who just need to view the map. Additionally, the internal data often uses UTF-16 (BE) encoding, rendering the raw XML unreadable in standard text editors like Notepad without specific encoding adjustments. For use in Virtual Tabletops (VTTs) like Roll20 or for printing, the raw .HXM is useless. Users generally need to convert these files to standard raster images like PNG or JPG for digital display, or PDF for high-resolution archiving and printing.

Convert.Guru analyzes your HXM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MSN, POG and RD1 files.
