About MSN files
The .MSN file is a Host Blocking File originally utilized by Microsoft Windows to restrict access to specific websites and IP addresses. These files were typically stored as hosts.msn in the system network directory to function alongside the standard Windows hosts configuration.
Because it relies on the obscure .MSN extension, modern text editors and standard online converters fail to recognize it automatically. Double-clicking the file usually triggers an annoying system prompt asking how to open it. Without the right software association, accessing the raw IP data becomes a hassle.
Converting .MSN to a universal format like TXT is the most practical solution for immediate readability across Mac, Windows, and mobile devices. If you need to audit a massive list of blocked domains, converting the data to CSV allows you to manage the network records in a spreadsheet.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MSN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MSN file to INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV, PROPERTIES or RC, you can use Microsoft Windows or similar software from the "Host Blocking Settings" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to MSN, try Microsoft Windows or another comparable tool in the "Host Blocking Settings" category.
The MSN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MSN converter.
