.RGE files primarily function as 3D scan range files created by specialized 3D scanning software. They store raw spatial and range data captured during the scanning process. A secondary use is the Entourage File Archive format, used by the discontinued Microsoft Entourage email client for Mac to back up emails, contacts, and calendar events.
These formats are highly proprietary and largely obsolete. The 3D scan .RGE files are locked to specific legacy 3D scanning hardware, making them useless in modern 3D suites like Blender without specialized export. The Entourage .RGE archive is notoriously difficult to access because the software was discontinued in 2008. It requires legacy Mac hardware or complex third-party migration tools. Files often exceed gigabytes in size and are completely unsupported by modern web browsers.
For 3D files, exporting to OBJ, STL, or PLY is the only way to retain geometry for modern use. For Entourage archives, extracting to MBOX, EML, or PST is necessary to read emails in modern clients like Microsoft Outlook.
This file format is difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary format. Standard online converters fail to process it because the encoding is undocumented.
