Extract text from RFU files

An .RFU file is a Remote Firmware Update container primarily generated by Hewlett-Packard (HP) for their line of LaserJet and OfficeJet printers. Unlike standard documents or media, this file contains binary code and instructions intended solely for the printer's internal operating system. Users typically encounter these files when downloading drivers from the HP Support site or when managing legacy hardware that lacks automatic over-the-air updates.
The frustrating part with .RFU files is their inaccessibility; you cannot double-click to "open" them in a text editor, nor can you convert them to viewable formats like PDF or JPG without rendering the data useless. They are essentially "envelopes" meant to be sent directly to the printer's input stream. Trying to open them in standard software often results in gibberish or corrupt data errors. For practical use, these files are often "converted" into a print stream (via command line or FTP) to flash the device. If you strictly need to analyze the contents, technical users might attempt to extract the raw binary payload to a BIN file, though this requires specialized knowledge of firmware headers.
